In Chains (The Lay of Wayland)

from Down the White Waters by Ash of Ashes

/

lyrics

When twilight cloaks the world
clad for battle they approach
in stealth they lurk and wait
to gain the master’s golden hoard
The craftsman comes home from the hunt
and lays down his sword and head
from the shadows they arise
and to the king’s hall the captured take

In chains by iron bound - never
to see my kin and home - ever
your chains won’t stand my wit - never
my curse and cunning shall see me free

The wooden hall, the warriors’ home,
majestically commands the hills,
sign of wealth and fortitude.
The hall’s alight with flickering fire
the king and queen on oaken thrones
the captured smith is made to kneel
to swear his servitude.

Now I will forge - wealth of gold
precious curse – your greed

In chains by iron bound - never
to see my kin and home - ever
your chains won’t stand my wit - never
my curse and cunning shall see me free

Far away from the vale of wolves
hamstrung the master dwells
bound to a forge day and night
his only task the king’s delight
But in his long and weary days
he devises a cunning plan
the heirs to the royal lands
the king’s downfall shall provide.

In chains by iron bound - never
to see my kin and home - ever
your chains won’t stand my wit - never
my curse and cunning shall see me free

Now I will forge - wealth of gold
precious curse – your greed
